Climbing is a demanding sport – both physically and mentally – and structured Strength & Conditioning (S&C) can make a significant difference in a climber’s performance, injury resilience, and confidence. I now deliver weekly youth S&C sessions and offer one-to-one support for climbers at Boulder UK in Preston.

Why Strength and Conditioning for Young Climbers?

Early exposure to physical training – when done properly – helps young climbers build good movement habits, reduce injury risk, and support long-term performance.

Evidence-based models such as LTAD (Lloyd & Oliver, 2012) stress the importance of developing fundamental movement skills before specialising in a single sport. This is especially relevant in climbing, where overuse injuries and early burnout are common concerns.

Key benefits of S&C for youth climbers include:

  • Improved strength, balance, and coordination
  • Better mobility and movement control
  • Reduced injury risk, especially to fingers, elbows, and shoulders
  • Enhanced confidence in their physical abilities
  • Long-term enjoyment and performance in sport

β€œChildren are not mini adults – and their training should reflect that. Our goal is to develop robust, adaptable young athletes who can thrive in climbing and beyond.”

What Happens in These Sessions?

Each group session includes a mixture of:

  • Functional warm-up and mobility work
  • Climbing-specific movement drills
  • Age-appropriate strength training (bodyweight, resistance bands, games)
  • Prehab and injury-prevention exercises
  • Encouragement of self-awareness and positive training habits

These sessions are ideal for young climbers of all levels – from enthusiastic beginners to competition climbers – and are delivered in a fun, supportive environment.
